How to Become a CNA in Mississippi
There are multiple eligibility routes to become a CNA in Mississippi. The most straight forward approach is to complete an approved CNA training / education program in Mississippi, but there are other ways to qualify as well. Students currently enrolled in a Mississippi LPN or RN program are eligible to challenge the CNA certification exam, as well as current RNs and LPNs working and licensed in Mississippi. For individuals who hold a CNA license in another state they can apply for license by reciprocity.
Regardless of which path you take to enter the profession the goal is universal. The state of Mississippi wants to make sure that each and every person working as a licensed CNA possesses a full understanding of the necessary concepts and information required to perform the job duties. The state also expects all nurse aides to be able to adequately perform the 25 essential CNA skills when called upon. The state certification exam is administered by PearsonVUE and its goal is to ensure that the above qualifications are met by all nurse aides.
While training to become a certified nursing assistant one will study infection prevention, interpersonal communication, nutrition and fluids, ethics, body mechanics, family support, hospice care, dementia and Alzheimer’s care, incident reporting, restorative care, psychology and more. The nurse aide will be the first point of contact for the patient and their ability to document the patient’s status is critical to the success of the entire health care team working to help the patient. The CNA must be able to remain calm in times of patient distress and deal with potentially anxious, nervous and/or un-educated family members. The work performed by the CNA will provide the supervising doctor or registered nurse with a starting point to begin making their evaluations, prescriptions and treatment plans.
Working as a CNA in Mississippi can provide a decent living wage and give the individual unique insight into working in the health care field. If the person loves the job they can keep it as long as they renew their license every two years. If they enjoy the work but are seeking a higher level of job responsibilities or higher earnings potential they can always return to school and become an LPN or RN. Whichever learning program they enroll in will build upon their existing medical knowledge and fill in the additional information required to earn the higher professional designation.
