How to Become an LPN in New York
The question is why would you want to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)? The answer is, why not? Becoming an LPN is an excellent and reasonable way to get your foot in the healthcare profession. There are many healthcare administrators and registered nurses today that start out as LPNs.
The really great thing about becoming an LPN is that it can usually become a reality in as little as one year. If you are a little unsure if this is the profession for you, it will provide you with a great way to say “test the waters” and see if the nursing profession is actually what you want. If you feel that you would enjoy working with patients, have really good interpersonal skills, and are good at problem-solving and multitasking, then seriously consider becoming an LPN.
Most LPN programs involve a year of your time and are typically located at community colleges, technical schools and at some universities. The courses included are such things as practical nursing courses and pharmacology. Most LPN programs require you have a high school diploma or an equivalent, be 18 years old, have letters of recommendations, and a high school grade point average of at least 2.0 or higher.
One of the fastest growing fields is the health care profession. If you want a job but do not have the time or the funds required for a four year degree, then consider becoming an LPN. The LPN works more directly with the patients, checking vital signs, monitoring patients, assisting with simple medical procedures, and administering of most medications.
In the state of New York, there is a growing number of opportunities for nurses. There are actually 21% of the nurses in the state that are LPN’s and that number is growing. The average LPN salary in New York is $41,490. This salary varies depending on the area of the state you are working. The LPN comfort score for the state is 59 which is low. What this score does is take into consideration the average LPN salary, the average state salary, and the cost of living.
New York requires that a person be only 17 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. To become an LPN in New York, you can take a nine month course as part of the high school curriculum, attend a college program for at least four semesters, take a nine month course in the military that has been approved by the New York State Department of Education or complete an approved professional nursing program.
After completing an LPN course, you must have a CPR card and pass the NCLEX-PN exam. The comfort score of the registered nurse (RN) in New York is considerably higher at 133, so many LPN’s continue their education through programs that allow them to both work and attend RN school.
The nursing shortage is increasing all over the United States. With the increase in technology and the improved health procedures, people are simply living longer. With this increase in population, the demand for nurses is only going to continue to increase. Considering the comfort score of the RN is seriously better than the LPN, starting out as a LPN and continuing your education is suggested. The outlook for nurses in New York is especially bright though. Becoming an LPN in New York will definitely provide you with both security and many opportunities.
