How to Become an LPN in Ohio
To become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in Ohio requires the candidate to complete an accredited LPN program and pass the National Council for Licensure Examination. LPNs must be licensed by the state of Ohio in accordance with the Ohio State Board of Nursing to practice nursing and hold the title of LPN.
In Ohio, 26% of the nursing workforce is made up of LPNs. Nursing is expected to grow by 20 to 22% through the year 2020. That translates to new nursing opportunities, as well as an increase in current nursing positions. The growth will add about a million nursing positions throughout the country, and for Ohio it means an addition 20,000 to 25,000 new employment opportunities.
LPN Job Description
The duties of an LPN will vary depending on the type of facility. LPNs typically dispense medication and monitor reactions and results, monitor vital signs and recommend corrective action when vitals are not consistently in the normal zone, prepare, implement and maintain patient care plans, dress wounds, change bandages, test patient’s blood sugar levels, document and maintain patients medical records and interface between patients, physicians, family members and other medical staff.
LPN Education in Ohio
LPN candidates in Ohio must complete an LPN program approved and accredited by the Ohio State Nursing Board. LPN programs can be found at vocational training centers, community colleges, two and four year colleges and universities and some high schools that provide career and technology programs. Most LPN programs take eight months to a year to complete and result in the award of a diploma or certificate. Some schools offer a two year LPN program and award an Associate’s degree upon completion. The programs are required to include classroom studies and clinical training. Course work found in LPN programs include, but are not limited to, nursing fundamentals, nursing management, medical terminology, anatomy, nutrition, pharmacology and physiology. Clinical training is performed at a local healthcare facility and under the direction of a registered nursing instructor.
LPN Licensing
After the completion of an LPN program, the graduate will apply to State Nursing Board to take the National Council for Licensure Examination for LPNs (NCLEX-PN). The application to the Nursing Board will include a fingerprint card and a fingerprint based criminal background check. The fee for the fingerprint card must be paid directly to the Ohio State Police, and the application fee and background check fee are paid to the Board of Nursing. The Board will review the application and notify the applicant to register with Pearson VUE, the exam administrators. The applicant will choose the most convenient testing site and choose an available time and date to take the exam. There is a separate fee to be paid to Pearson to take the exam. The State Nursing Board will notify graduates of exam results and report either pass or fail. Graduates who pass will receive a license via postal mail and graduates who fail will receive instructions to retake the exam. The initial license will be valid until the next even year, which may be less than two years.
LPNs in Ohio are required to renew their license every two years during even numbered years. The licensing period is from 01 September to 31 August. LPNs must complete 24 hours of continuing education contact hours during the 24 months of licensing. At least one continuing education hour must be related to Chapter 4723 of the Ohio Nurse Practice code and rules – Category A. The continuing education hours can be taken online or at seminars. All programs must be approved by the Ohio State Nursing Board. Renewal applicants must provide documentation as part of the renewal process.
