How to Become an LPN in Oklahoma
With 34% of the nursing workforce in Oklahoma being LPNs, there is a demonstrated need for LPNs in the state. The average LPN salary is $32,250 and LPNs can expect to top out the salary at about $70,000, depending on years of experience, education and level of responsibility. Entry level LPNs can expect to start at $22,000 to $24,000 annually.
There are a few attractive benefits offered by employers that LPNs can take advantage of including health and dental insurance, tuition reimbursement, long and short term disability, life insurance and pension and 401K participation. LPNs also have a choice of shifts, depending on where they work, making their work week flexible. LPNs will also work holidays and weekends.
LPNs in Oklahoma are required to complete an LPN program that is accredited and government approved. The programs must include theory and clinical training in care of adults and children, maternal and newborn nursing and psychiatric mental illness training. After the educational and clinical training requirements have been completed, the student is eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). In addition to LPN studies, applicants who wish to take the NCLEX-PN must provide documentation they hold a high school diploma or equivalency certificate. Applicants for licensure must also complete a criminal background check and a fingerprint card and provide a 2”x2” passport type photograph. Applicants are urged to submit their application to test two months before graduation.
An official transcript of the student’s grades must also be submitted to the Board, but the submission must come from the school and not the student. The Board will review the application and when approved the Board will issue the applicant an authorization to test (ATT). The student will have 90 days from the date of ATT issue to schedule and take the exam. As soon as the student submits their application to test, they should register with the administrator of the examination, Pearson VUE. Students have two years from the date of graduation to submit an application to test. If the exam is not taken within that time frame, the student will be required to take additional nursing class work and clinical training.
On the day of the NCLEX-PN, the graduate must provide the testing center with the ATT, picture identification and social security number. Graduates will be notified of test scores within 7 to 10 days of the exam and the notification will be via postal mail. Test results will not be given over the telephone.
LPN licenses expire every two years on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. LPNs may renew their license no more than 90 days in advance of the expiration date. Reminder notices are typically sent out 10 weeks prior to expiration, but an LPN who does not receive a reminder are still required to renew their license in a timely manner. LPNs will receive their pocket LPN license approximately three weeks after renewal.
Nursing positions, especially those for LPNs will increase by 25% through the year 2020. LPNs will find employment in a variety of places including nursing homes and hospitals, visiting nurse and hospice organizations, rehabilitative and occupational healthcare facilities, educational and correctional facilities, private and public clinics and the non-medical facility such as reviewing medical claims for insurance companies.
LPNs undertake a variety of tasks and are an integral part of the medical team. LPNs work under the direction of a registered nurse (RN) and undertake basic patient care, dispense medications, both orally and by injection, dress wounds, change bandages, monitor medication reaction, take and monitor vital signs and implement and maintain patient care plans.
